Luna and I, a Brief Moment

Had a great opportunity to go through the archives Saturday night. While not organized, I’ve found some of the masters from past calendars, a bunch of originals from other projects, along with both Blood, Babes and Bullets and Dauntless.

A portrait of the two of us. I had a dream of re-starting a zine called Dauntless. This piece made it into the back of Happy New Year, a poem by Bruce Loose of Flipper I illustrated in collaboration with Luna and Bruce

1993 was one hell of a year for me. I was completely spun in regards to my future. My time at Foothill JC was close to an end, and my attempt to earn a bachelors’ degree was spiraling in the bowl. All this, and I was about to shove my size eight and a half Mason boot right down my throat on the job at the copy shop and be shown the door.

Right in the middle of it all walked in two Dominatrixes. Artemesia I met briefly at Baycon. Luna C. Sanguine was a friend from Foothill. I had no idea Luna was a Domme until I told Luna in an excited rush that I was head over heels for Artemesia. Chaos would later ricochet me in Luna’s direction, and I fell head over heels for her. Never mind the fact she was the common law wife of a Satanist who did bizarre channeling.

Jay E. Moyes, Self Portrait 1990

Self Portrait, 1990. I pictured myself like an exhausted gumshoe. Dazed at lack of sleep and too much caffeine. Truth be told, turns out I was high on cold medicine like Actifed. At the time, I didn’t know what it was doing to me. I honestly thought that’s what normal felt like at that age. Kudos to my friends Jamski and Doug in the graffiti.

The affair with Luna was a crucible of lust, and it fired my ego. Much of it seems so vanilla in comparison to what I’ve seen since, but Luna was my serious introduction into the San Francisco leather scene. She dropped out at one point, disappearing into the Berkeley and Emeryville underground along with the vets, homeless and bikers.

Long story short, her disappearance drove me completely crazy and was hard to get over. Thankfully, there were a lot of good people in the BDSM community that helped me cope. The good news is she eventually emerged and got help.

Portrait of Luna and I. The necklace is based on a real life turquose necklace someone gave her. In hindsight, I looked silly with a mustache. I watched too many detective shows and westerns.

She and I don’t talk as often as we should. Truth be told, we were dangerous together. She influenced a number of drawings and themes in my artwork. I’ll post some photos at another time, along with some other drawings she influenced.

1997 Dominatrix Calendar Gallery Update

Two more additions to the Dominatrix Calendar archives

1997 Dominatrix Calendar Cover

The 1997 Dominatrix Calendar was not a huge hit, but it did work out quite well. I had just broke up with my girlfriend Amber. Things just went sideways, the less said, the better for both of us. 1996 had been a year of learning experiences, good and bad. I had gone from up and coming artist, to busboy at the Sagebrush Cantina. However, once free of the relationship with the ex, I was able to make fast friends in the BDSM community. The calendar was a fantastic way to introduce myself as a kinky artist, and an available subbie.

The cover for 1997 was not one of my strongest pieces. Time was running out, and I really needed to get all this together and ready for print. Almost everything was done by hand. Nothing was done by computer, which was a point of pride. The cover is loaded with elements I love, like the symbolism, the hot rod, the floating pyramids, the multi-limbed Femdom Goddess.

The cover is directly from one of the hard copy calendars, and you can see how it was signed and numbered.

Queen of the Thunderbirds

The question isn’t how did she get up there. It’s how are you going down?

January was another matter. This is Queen of the Thunderbirds. I love the idea of Zero-G sex and BDSM. The idea of floating and playing at the same time to me is exhilarating. This was one of the few drawings Amber posed for. I really needed a model to get the position right. While she did not model for many pieces, she was influential for a number of the furry drawings that made it into the 97 calendar.

If I had to do it all over again, I’d do Queen of the Thunderbirds as a painting. It really would do well on a large scale.

Scrambled: Bicycle Swap Meet & Agony of The Seat

A Journey to the Atomic Cycles Bicycle Swap Meet in Van Nuys

Bobber Style Bicycle

My Pride and Joy. I should call her Mistress, cuz she hurts my ass like hell!

I’ve been waiting months for this. Yesterday, I took the bobber bike on a test run to see if she’d make the trip to the Atomic Cycles Bicycle Swap Meet. The bike did well, but doesn’t like to coast much. It’s still an issue even after re-packing the back wheel bearings. This caused one hell of a work out, and I was creaking when I rode out at 7:30 this morning.

Thank heavens I only had to be slightly cognitive. Despite a motrin tablet, I had to stifle a scream when sitting down. The massive seat is great on short runs, but no so great for long hauls with constant pedaling. Still sore from yesterday’s 14 mile run, I was able to hold together for the 6 mile trip.

Schwinn Scrambler

This is for all my school buddies and friends from Livermore

One of the first things I saw was a Schwinn Scrambler that looked very close to the one I had in Junior High School. My friends used to laugh at me for taking jumps on one of these, but I still think it’s pretty cool. Obviously, it made an impact on me.

We don need no stinking badges!

Next to him was a table with antique toys. While the event is bike-centric, vendors will bring other goodies as well. The “rifle” you see here is a well-made repeating cap gun made in Spain. Another guy showed up with a huge box of patches.

Vintage BMX Bikes

And my buddies from school would have gone apeshit over these!

Today was a buyer’s market. While there was good foot traffic, it wasn’t as intense as in April. I called Maija to see if she was coming to vend. She overslept, and was going to miss the event. I brought a fistful of ones for her from my night gig to make change, so her loss was my gain.

There was BMX gear…

And more BMX gear…

BMX Parts

American made too!

Did I mention Atomic Cycles draws a pretty heavy BMX crowd? They have coaster bike runs and BMX rides. Don’t get me wrong, if it rolls, they love it. There were some fixies and fixie parts there. Along with bunches of vintage bikes, like…

Schwinn Hornet

This Hornet…

Tiki Beach Cruiser

TIKI!!!!!

This Tiki style beach cruiser. Ok, it might not be vintage, but it’s still really cool!

Schwinn Scrambler with tail light

I love the aftermarket tail light!

More Schwinns…

More Vintage Schwinns

And more Schwinns! I mean seriously, why go to a warehouse store for a cheap copy when you can get a real collectible for a good price? Paul at Atomic Cycles will even do a tune up for you for 25 bucks!

There were a lot of great deals overall. Certainly there were road bikes. One guy brought three electric bikes. Another vendor brought a fleet of mountain bikes.

Cheap bikes in need of a good home

These came from a police auction. Most were forty dollars.

Paul also has some interesting bikes of his own, including:

Such a bargain! I almost bought it.

This trike, which was only 100 dollars. It’s also worth it to attend just to see who shows up one what. One guy showed up on an Indonesian pedicab (damn I should have got a picture). He should have been charging for rides.

Bicycle Trailer

Want to ride, but don’t know how to carry it home? Use a bike trailer.

At least two guys showed up with bike trailers. An excellent idea to show off and shop at the same time.

In the end, here’s what I came home with.

Got quite a bit for the money. Would have been really expensive at a sporting good store or a highbrow bike shop.

The big score was the Cat’s Eye bike light set for five dollars. Bike lighting can get expensive. The shifters and pedals came were from Paul’s overflowing surplus of parts and cost ten bucks. I would have paid that for one set of pedals at some places. The vintage Schwinn grips and faceplate were cheap. I’m going to repaint the faceplate with a high-heeled boot and mount that on the front of the bobber bike.

Short form, whether you want a full sized bike, or to custom build your own, you can find a lot of great stuff for a great price at the bicycle swap meet. Don’t forget this is home of the Atomic Cycles bike shop. The owner, Paul will repair and customize virtually everything, and has bikes, old & new, you’ve got to check out, at a good price .
