Tony Batman’s Uncanny Valley of Sure Fuck

Sure Fuck Cologne post card design

This isn’t just a message from our sponsor, this is one of the reasons I’ve been away from updating lately. Sherry’s been doing publicity for the novelty cologne, Sure Fuck. It’s a nice smelling gag gift for bachelors and young men. Even though they’ve got a web designer and artist, I got asked to help with some post card art. So I put this together for them.

What’s also kept me away from my desk is Tony Batman.

Tony Batman Sketch

Who the fuck is Tony Batman! you ask? Long time ago, there was an internet station called Ksex Radio. It was a great place with kinky people like Sir Nik, Orpheus, Badmaster, and Reverend Mel. Sherry and I met Tony there and became fast friends. He moved from Ksex to a place called Prime Time Uncensored, interviewing porn stars. We helped him with sponsors and I did graphics, video editing and direction for the show.

He’s moved to Florida, and we hear from him on occasion and he fills us in on adventures. Sometimes, I get called to make flyers or promotional graphics for his projects in exchange for ads on his porn news site, TonyBatman.com.

This week, he called, asking for help with a promotional graphic for his talk show on Planet Platypus. Tony’s got two lovely co hosts, and he wanted them represented on his shoulders as angel and devil. We’re off to a lovely start, but a little problem that can be funny.

Ever see a drawing that’s realistic, but creepy. It looks kinda like what we want to see, but not exactly what we want to see. Welcome to the Uncanny Valley. It’s why anime girls look so hot, until you see what they’d look like in person. It’s why dolls can be really creepy, and clowns downright scary. It’s why I’m not big on mainstream comics.

I started drawing Tony in a Japanese style you may not be familiar with. There are a series of Japanese men’s comics about gangs, organized crime, sports, and martial arts that focus on more realistic men’s features. That’s where the square jaw, realistic nose, and lips come in.

A major part of the mistake was doing the drawing head on. His nose is real, but you’d get a better sense if you saw him at an angle. The eyes are also manga big, but not realistic to Tony, and not cartoony enough to be comfortable. He’s definitely got the flat top, schnoz, and big squared jaw, but just not quite like that. So it’s accurate, but not.

So it’s back to the drawing board, the next sketches will be a little more cartoonish, and I’ll also do some more realistic profile views. Of course, we’ll also be seeing more of his co-hosts.

Have a great weekend.
