Midnite Sally, Spokestoon for Midnite Videos

Midnite Sally Meets Rocco

A few years ago, we got a call from Midnite Videos, an up and coming X-rated VOD site that was going to specialize in smartphone content. Sounded like a great idea, but we had very little to hype at the time.

Knowing we had to sell this to consumers and distributors alike, we created the spokestoon Midnite Sally.

While the overall campaign and site were not a complete success, Sally helped out in several ways. She gave Midnite Videos a pretty face for free, instead of paying a porn star big bucks. The character created a visual incentive to porn press sites to run what might otherwise be a boring press release. We’d go to places like Porn Star Karaoke at Sardo’s and give away original artwork of Midnite Sally.

While technical difficulties pushed back the debut of Midnite Videos, this gave us time for painful learning experiences of working in Flash. Sherry did the voice of Sally. Cartoon Network had created a mature-rated, user-submitted video site, perfect for Sally (and stopped allowing user content almost right after we signed up). We created a youtube account for Sally, and started a page on the flash site Newgrounds.

Did we mention this was a painful learning experience? As time progressed, the work improved. Unfortunately, the technical problems and payments from the client did not. By this time, the stock market had crashed and the capital quickly drained. The site had become a standard VOD site running older content (the smartphone programming never came to be).

We created a porn news site featuring new releases for Midnite Videos. Midnite Sally was a hit on Facebook until someone realized she was only a cartoon character and got her account deleted for not being a real person. I loved Sally, she was an underdog character, fighting her way up, much like Midnite Videos itself. Unfortunately, her fame and fortune were just not meant to be.
