I walked in the door at 4:00 A.M. after SMUT was over and was in bed right after my friend Rick Castro of Antebellum woke up across town. I missed out on most of the action at SMUT because my table got lots of attention, but the crowd was huge and cheers for the stage shows came often. Photos are starting to trickle in at https://www.facebook.com/SMUTisART
Betty Bondage did a bloodsports performance using cupping and needle play to create art pieces brushed in fresh blood. Mirabelle Jones and Michelle Fugate sold me a souvenir for Antebellum of Micro Erotica, with a free magnifying glass. My neighbor Nick had some great photography on display.
The paddles were a hit, pun intended. One of the 50 Shades paddles sold to a quite dominant guy who walked over and began using it on his sub. Their friends rushed over to check out more paddles and asked if I had the image as a greeting card or sticker. Alas, no, but that got put on my list of things to do and they will be ready for Bizarre Bazaar at Threshold November 1st. More about the bazaar down below.
The next day, I arrived at Antebellum’s “Goths in the Sunlight” art show in a huff. Rick had me working the door, and wanted everyone to black their eyes out for the event. Make up is not my strong point (ironic, I know), so Sherry got drafted to help me and I spent most of the time freaking out.
When I walk into Antebellum, and Rick comes forward to say hello. His eyes were circled in dark eye shadow, barely hiding bags under his eyes from fatigue leading up to the show. Something wasn’t right, and in that moment he confessed to me this was his first time doing eye make up like this, he really didn’t like it, and it would most likely be the last time he did it again. After what I went through, I nearly fell on the floor laughing.
His bartender, a black, chiseled model for Tom of Finland Foundation, had gone the Blade Runner route and did a black stripe across his eyes. It may not have been goth, but it was sharp and cooler than cool.
For the first time working the door, strangers began walking up off Hollywood and asking about the show. Most were hesitant about the reception, but were keen to come back during the week. Rick Castro got a coffin full of pics, many courtesy of Stefan Pinto. Check them out at http://antebellumgallery.blogspot.com/2015/10/goths-in-sunlight-opening-night.html
So it’s on to Bizarre Bazaar on November 1st. I’m bringing paddles, stickers, cards, sketches and originals. There will be deals you just can’t get off the net and some pieces unavailable online.
So come on by to 11300 Hartland St. in North Hollywood, just north of Vanowen. Bizarre Bazaar is open 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M and yes, there is an after party! Threshold is also holding a Halloween party the night before. For more details on these events, check out www.threshold.org
