Flash Review: Chainmail Bikini Squad

About four years ago, give or take, I was working on flash animation, doing the Midnite Sally project. I stumbled on Animax, a mainstream flash animation company here in Porn Valley (ironically located across the street from the former AVN office in Van Nuys). The president of the company is a famous Canadian comic, I’ll let you figure out who on your own. They have some great ideas. One of which was to sponsor a local animation group with presentations, speeches, and networking, called Valley Flash.

It was there I met Sabri, who’s since moved on, but it was also there I saw a great presentation on how flash has changed animation entertainment. The presentation highlighted Aaron Simpson, of the Flash animation trade publication, Cold Hard Flash.

We hooked up on Facebook, and I almost forgot he was mainstream. Especially when he posted his new project Chainmail Bikini Squad.

Barely safe for work, and youtube, the pilot introduces three women seeking adventure in a fictional land of swords and sorcery. Our heroine, Ginger, plays it straight, seeking empowerment in a profession run by men, while her buddies roll with the punches. The pilot really begins to say it all as Ginger realizes that the guild requires her armor to look like it was designed by Victoria’s Secret. Even Stormy Leather would have given her a corset or something.

As the episodes progress, and the bikini-clad carnage begins, I wasn’t getting some of the jokes. Then it dawned on me, they’re not in a swords and sorcery fantasy cartoon, they’re players in a video game! Simpson and his crew have not only incorporated sexy jokes about sexism, but they’ve spoofed game developments like “leveling up”

The artwork is definitely up there, and this series would easily fit in on programming like Adult Swim. The jokes poke at sexism, with plenty of skin, but no nudity or hardcore sex.

The hard part is, the updates are rare, or so I thought. I’ve been seeing them about once a month (not surprisingly, it is still a lot of work). Then while writing up the review, I noticed two new episodes.

I definitely give this a thumb’s up for good cheesecake (and the occasional beefcake), incorporation of fetish art into the cartoons (even though it’s PG-rated and unintentional), and for taking on issues of sexism without being preachy. Ginger may not always get her way, but she does get to take a stand, and many times gets the upper hand. This is one of my personal favorites and I eagerly await more episodes.

Flash Review: Deep Space 69

Porn Could Learn From This

I’m an animation fan, and I’ve been following a number of flash and computer animated series and creators for a long time now.

Recently, Mondo Media released Deep Space 69, a series of comic shorts just barely safe for Youtube. At around 2-5 minutes long, they’re great for wasting a little time without getting absorbed in a story.

Porn could learn a few things from these guys. The first few episodes were really cheezy. Our hero, clearly an homage to Star Trek‘s James T. Kirk spends his time bouncing around the galaxy getting laid, with his buddy Hamilton bailing him out of trouble. On occasion, such as in Looking for Love in Alderan Places, the roles reverse.

Hamilton is the last of his race, which becomes the butt of some of the jokes like in the video above. Hamilton pay’s our hero’s way, settles problems, and provides ample warning for oncoming conflict. However, like any good bro, no matter how lousy our hero treats Hamilton, he’ll eventually come through.

After the first episodes focusing on cheezy sex jokes, things got a little different. The most recent piece, Blade Jogger, penetrated deeper, with more focus on the sci-fi spoofing and less on getting laid. Less arousing? Yes, but as someone who’s watched Blade Runner about 50 times (including in black and white to get the film noir references and feel), it’s good to see the staff go long to deliver solid fan humor.

Now, I’m not prejudiced because our hero’s name is Jay. The animation is better than many of Mondo’s other cartoons. While some of the humor is brief, it is nowhere near as gory or sick as some of Mondo’s other heavyweights. Personally, I think they could take this further by offering a member’s site for the sex that doesn’t make it onto youtube. Then again, with the cheap animation, maybe it’s better we don’t get to see our hero’s escapades in greater detail. A live action porn version would have potential.

As you get to the end of each episode, there’s a link that pops up allowing you to forward to the next. To check out the series from the beginning, start with the video below.

I definitely give the series a thumb’s up. I doubt we’ll see this on Adult Swim or as a full half hour show. That could be for the better though. The short times keep the humor just quick enough for you to do a double take and want to watch again.

This comedy is definitely sexy, funny, and even delivers on sci-fi humor.

Leathermen and Women, Publish or Perish

Piece I originally created for the Spectator

This is a piece I created for The Spectator. It was a rocky beginning that would not pay off until a few years down the line. To most, The Spectator was a smutty rag that masqueraded as an adult newspaper, to those in the Bay Area sex business, it was the local trade magazine. Their newsracks were all over the Bay Area, in front of clubs, bars, restaurants and bus stations.

And hey, coming out of The Edge in Palo Alto as a college student, I’m thinking I’m over 18, I’ve got a dollar in change, sure, I’ll buy some smut. I won’t say it changed my life, or turned me into a sex addict, but it was a step in the right direction.

The cover had a beautiful photo from Stormy Leather. Unlike other adult newspapers, The Spectator actually had interesting articles and art. So, I whipped up the piece above thinking they’d love it, and I called them offering to fax it over. They thought I was nuts and hung up on me.

Good thing, it wouldn’t be until about four years later when I sent over sample drawings looking to trade artwork for advertising. Second time was a charm, but I still liked drawing the first piece, especially the rose stockings.

Silverlake Cliff and WeHo Vince from 4Front Magazine

This bit of gay beefcake was for a West Hollywood magazine called 4-Front, published out of a restaurant and business building called The French Quarter. It was my first time trying to put feelers out to adult publications in Los Angeles, 4-Front loved my artwork and commissioned me to draw these guys for their fictional humor serial, as the WeHo Turns. That’s Silverlake Cliff on the left and his buddy WeHo Vince.

I was also off to a rocky start in Los Angeles too. I was very glad to be published in 4-Front, and they gave me the head’s up about 665.
