The social media blackout started something with me. The present situation at home and outside has been pretty bleak. This isn’t the time for pretty, sexy drawings in the social media narrative.
Some are saying silence equals approval of police brutality, but there’s a bigger picture I’m not the only one to notice. Many were asked to stop producing content on Twitter and Instagram as it was distracting from the narrative and discussion that Black Lives Matter, even if supportive. For example, do we really need a white celebrity taking the spotlight to say what they should have been saying all along?
I’m also very frustrated with the social media feeds. Media thrives on conflict.
I refuse to drive conflict by contributing content and diverting the necessary message.
So, until Juneteenth, quite the coincidence, I am on strike from social media. I will retweet stuff for Sanctuary and support positive stuff where I can, but I will not feed further content into the mind grinder until at least June 19th passes.
This message is not intended as grandstanding. This will not be posted in my feeds. Instead, I have acted by donating to Black Lives Matter, and will continue to donate. Instead of simply doing nothing, I will stand back from the spotlight so Black people who need to be heard can be heard, and I am personally acting to support people in my daily life.
Black lives still matter!
