You might be thinking, “Haven’t you done this before!? When are you going to get a solo show!?” Well, it has been a rough year. I’m still juggling three gigs, and after the emergency in April, submissions for art shows had to take a step back. Of course exactly about that point is when Wicked Grounds approved me for a solo show. That show is still going by the way!

I’ve been holding off on gallery submissions this year, and I get an e-mail from Matt Kennedy at Gallery 30 South asking if I’d submit for the 2019 Coaster Show. Kennedy has been very supportive, going back to the shows at La Luz. Of course I’m going to say yes.

This year, I have a couple of pieces dedicated to my favorite breweries. The whole idea behind this was that notion of sitting at the bar, doodling a little something while having a beer. And I’ve done some at bars in the past!

My thinking was “I can knock out one or two, right? Shouldn’t be a big deal. I can even do these in the van at work on lunch breaks. Black and white, maybe with one more color to boost.” Well, things kinda got outta hand, as they do in art. Matador Reds stayed pretty basic. Kinky Blondes needed to go full color.

Its Easy Being Green was a last minute lark. The b-side was already painted white, and I just inked the back in black and played with a green gell pen. The green really pops.
It’s easy to keep going with these. They’re small and easy to transport. I had a couple of prepped pieces from last year, so they went with me when I was at work or meeting friends.
the b-side is still in progress, and a little tacky. The again, the sketch was done with the gell pen. Normally I start with a pencil sketch.
A couple of these are from where I started with artwork on paper and mounted them onto the coaster.

The piece above started as an after thought. This was a half-finished coaster for last year’s show. I was testing the paper mounting method and this was the back side. You can even see a little shine from the glue in a couple of spots if you look close. What was supposed to be the front side is down below.
