It started so well. Dirty Show Detroit, La Luz de Jesus, Uncensored at Bunker, LA Pride, the year was off to a stunning start. Literally the best year ever for my career as an artist.
But things weren’t right at home. To be candid, they haven’t been right for a long time. My partner has been very distant and cold for years. By July, she had been downright mean, and not in the good way. Something had to give and I confronted her.
“Well for starters, we’re not a couple anymore,” was the first thing she said. It explained a lot, but it wasn’t until a couple weeks later she grudgingly said why. As Black and Blue Media, we lost our big client before moving into the house, and never really recovered from that. We scrambled to regain that high water mark. Professional art took a back seat. Until about 2013, when I made a resolution to myself to grow up and take art seriously.
At that moment when I started going to drawing workshops, working at Antebellum, and getting back into the kinky scene to show my work is when my partner decided we were finished as a couple. But she wouldn’t say it until a friend pried it out of her a couple weeks after the “not a couple” talk.
This changed everything. We’re roommates now. We’re still grownups. There’s no screaming matches, no stuff dragged in the street. However, I’ve had to question everything I was doing to keep the relationship and the household going.
I struggled so long to keep the house going. I put aside the notion of working in front of the camera out of respect for the relationship. I tried so hard to get out of the driving gig out of respect for our business.
So, everything is in question now. In August, I went full time at the driving gig. I now have health insurance for the first time since I worked at AVN. I’ve always been asked to move up the ladder there, now I’m seriously considering a job as supervisor or trainer.
Ears perked the moment word came out I was back on the market. Bondage expert Miss Cassie helps me get back together, and offered me her collar in November. Of course I accepted and we’re working together on her term as Ms. Sanctuary Leather 2019.
I still work with Mistress Cyan and Sanctuary LAX. We’ve got Lair at AVN coming up in a few weeks.
But the art has suffered. It’s not lost on me that if Sherry had spent more time encouraging our relationship and intimacy, I wouldn’t have much time for art. Many kind thanks to Matt Kennedy at Gallery 30 South for having me at his coaster show this fall.
I’ve missed the deadlines for La Luz and Dirty Show. I haven’t sent stuff in to Sin City Gallery in Vegas. I need to bring Natasha at New Profanity some vodka, and same goes for the boys at Tom of Finland foundation. Who knows what 2019 will bring?
But I think things will get better. It’s kinda like The Matrix blew up in my face. Reality has changed. I’m not as tied down to some things. And, if you count Miss Cassie, I got the girl…or I guess… the girl got me 🙂 Gotta do a sketch of her for you soon.
