Sherry gave me great idea for making the updates a little better. She suggested I shed some light on my techniques and talk about what I’m using to create the artwork. Many people are intimidated by drawing, the first mistake they make is bearing down hard with the pencil. Bearing down carves into the paper, and keeps you from properly shaping the line. The point of a sketch is to make soft, multiple lines that you can manipulate into the line you want.
One technique that gets used, but not discussed, is using the eraser to sculpt the lines, and take away penciled areas you don’t want. You could also call it drawing with the eraser. Today, for the Femdom art piece, Whip Frenzy, I’ll show how that’s done, along with how tweak the final drawing, and you’ll see the final edition of Whip Frenzy.
There were a lot of lines and shapes created for the eyes hair, and I’ve worked the page quite a bit. You can see I’ve got a bit of a jumbled mess. What I’m going to do is take the kneaded eraser, which is a soft eraser you can mold, and shape it into a tiny tip. I’ll go into the bangs carefully and take out a lot of the excess that keeps me from seeing the look I want.
Here, I’ve shaped the bangs more into what I want in order to form the lines. I also want to add some highlights to the eyes. Instead of sketching the highlights in, I’m just going to fill the whole area and erase the highlights out with the eraser on the technical pencil.
But first (surprise!) I’m going to ink in the bangs and eyes so I don’t loose anything. To put it simply, but getting the line down to what I want, then I can decide where to put the ink. By this point, it’s almost like tracing. The trick is, I’m using a size 01 Micron Pen, so I have to be very careful where I put that line. This photo should also put into perspective how small my originals are. The final piece here is maybe around 5 x 6 inches.
And here’s the highlights. All I’ve done is very gently erased out the middle. If I fuck up, all I have to do is fill it in and start again. To get a little more definition, I’ve gone over the edges of the highlights in pencil, but didn’t need much. I’ve also filled in part of the mouth to see what it would look like with a tongue. It works, so all systems are go. It’s time to finish inks, erase all the pencil, and scan it in.
By the way, the necklace our Dominatrix is wearing is of a black triangle. During the Nazi Holocaust, just as yellow stars were for the Jewish, and pink triangles were for gay men, black triangles were often used for sexual deviants and lesbians. Before the triskelion, some individuals in kink and leather assimilated the black triangle as a symbol for BDSM and leather identity.
And you can see this is from the sketch I did at the rope munch in March. I have two scanners, the one for the Mac is much sharper, which gives more contrast, but the lines are a little rougher. It also picks up a shitload more debris. First thing that has to happen once scanned in is to clean it up. I can tweak a lot out in curves, but it’s best to find some of more offensive clutter and erase it beforehand. Once scanned in and enlarged, I can also see ten times more pencil lines and dirt than I could see before, even with my reading glasses.
The final step today is doing what’s called an S Curve. The scanning and photo software often have an option called curves. Once the window is open, there is a diagonal line on the graph. You pull a point on the top to the right. This cleans up a lot of faint dust and leftover marks. It also lightens the ink a touch. By making a point below and pulling to the right, creating an S, you darken in the inked areas. It’s a great way to clean up a lot of work with out having to make a lot of effort.
And that’s it! I’m very happy with how this turned out. The original is available for $25. Simply send me an e-mail regarding purchase details.
