Most of the work I did at AVN was with Photoshop. There was a lot of scanning, touch-ups, and towards the end, a lot of collage.
But every once in a while, an opportunity would come up to get some illustration in. The VP, Darren Roberts hated illustration. He considered it outdated and unprofessional. I disagreed, especially given that publications such as the New Yorker and Wall Street Journal love editorial illustration.
We had a publisher n’ chief for a while named Tim Connelly, who came over from Adam Film World and was this dynamic leader. He wanted an issue of AVN dedicated to the working guys of the industry. Sections of the article would feature a segment of the male talent, along with an icon for the piece.
Always under the gun for time, I whipped up a grid of dicks, and roughed out ideas for the icons. What you see above is the second pass as I cleaned up the art.
Alas, this was not what Tim was looking for, and if memory serves me right, I think we used stock art or something. Which is a pity, because these were funny and original (and royalty free).
In other news, the Christmas art continues on Cafe Press…
You didn’t think this was gonna be all about dicks did you? Hot Rod Santa has raced into Cafe Press, and he’s on a lot of goodies that you can show off to the family without being embarrassed.
On the other hand, if you want to see Santa in something less family friendly, I’m working on facesitting Santa. The tricky part is getting it done before the 25th. Facesitting Santa will not be available on Cafe Press however, but maybe we can figure something out for next year 🙂
