Flash Review: Deep Space 69

Porn Could Learn From This

I’m an animation fan, and I’ve been following a number of flash and computer animated series and creators for a long time now.

Recently, Mondo Media released Deep Space 69, a series of comic shorts just barely safe for Youtube. At around 2-5 minutes long, they’re great for wasting a little time without getting absorbed in a story.

Porn could learn a few things from these guys. The first few episodes were really cheezy. Our hero, clearly an homage to Star Trek‘s James T. Kirk spends his time bouncing around the galaxy getting laid, with his buddy Hamilton bailing him out of trouble. On occasion, such as in Looking for Love in Alderan Places, the roles reverse.

Hamilton is the last of his race, which becomes the butt of some of the jokes like in the video above. Hamilton pay’s our hero’s way, settles problems, and provides ample warning for oncoming conflict. However, like any good bro, no matter how lousy our hero treats Hamilton, he’ll eventually come through.

After the first episodes focusing on cheezy sex jokes, things got a little different. The most recent piece, Blade Jogger, penetrated deeper, with more focus on the sci-fi spoofing and less on getting laid. Less arousing? Yes, but as someone who’s watched Blade Runner about 50 times (including in black and white to get the film noir references and feel), it’s good to see the staff go long to deliver solid fan humor.

Now, I’m not prejudiced because our hero’s name is Jay. The animation is better than many of Mondo’s other cartoons. While some of the humor is brief, it is nowhere near as gory or sick as some of Mondo’s other heavyweights. Personally, I think they could take this further by offering a member’s site for the sex that doesn’t make it onto youtube. Then again, with the cheap animation, maybe it’s better we don’t get to see our hero’s escapades in greater detail. A live action porn version would have potential.

As you get to the end of each episode, there’s a link that pops up allowing you to forward to the next. To check out the series from the beginning, start with the video below.

I definitely give the series a thumb’s up. I doubt we’ll see this on Adult Swim or as a full half hour show. That could be for the better though. The short times keep the humor just quick enough for you to do a double take and want to watch again.

This comedy is definitely sexy, funny, and even delivers on sci-fi humor.
